TB/HIV CO-INFECTION In Tanzania, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS with TB co-infection among people living with HIV (PLWHIV) who have an undetectable viral load attending care and treatment clinics (CTC) is a significant health concern, but specific data on this subgroup is somewhat limited. Overall, the prevalence of TB among HIV clients in care and treatment clinics in Tanzania was reported to be around 2.2% between 2011 and 2014. This prevalence was slightly higher among those not on antiretroviral therapy (ART) compared to those on ART . Among individuals with HIV, the risk of developing TB is considerably higher, with HIV-positive individuals having an annual risk of developing active TB at 5-15%, compared to a lifetime risk of 5-10% in the general population . The prevalence of TB is generally higher in males and in those not on ART . Specifically for those with an undetectable viral load, data suggest that maintaining effective ART and achieving viral suppression significantly reduces the risk of TB. However, co-infection remains a concern due to immune system challenges even in those with undetectable viral loads .
